Ingredient Sourcing FAQs

  1. What does "Human-Grade" actually mean for my pet? 
    At Red Dog Blue Kat, human-grade means every ingredient is sourced from the human food supply chain and handled in a CFIA-inspected, HACCP-verified facility. This ensures the highest standards of safety and nutrition that go far beyond traditional pet food requirements. We strictly reject the use of pet-grade meats, which often include '3D' or '4D' animals we believe are harmful to your pet's long-term health.
     

  2. Why do you source some proteins from outside of Canada? 
    While we prioritize local Canadian farmers like Beretta, JD Farms, and Rossdown, we refuse to compromise on your pet's nutrition when the local market fluctuates. We intentionally source our Lamb from New Zealand to ensure world-class grazing standards. For staples like Beef and Poultry, we only lean on our vetted global partners during local supply gaps—ensuring your pet’s diet stays consistent and reliable, without ever sacrificing our strict human-grade and ethical standards.

  3. Is your fish wild-caught or farmed?
    We exclusively use wild-caught fish, such as our MSC-certified Pacific Coast Herring. Wild-caught fish offer a superior nutrient profile and are free from the antibiotics and dyes often found in farmed fish, while MSC certification ensures the fishery is sustainable.
     

  4. How do you ensure your ingredients are traceable? 
    Every protein is traceable to its farm or fishery of origin through GS1 global traceability standards—the same gold standard used in the human food industry. We only partner with suppliers who share our commitment to animal welfare, environmental stewardship, and total supply chain visibility.
